Youtube RSS

Preview of Youtube RSS

Simple program for fetching rss feeds of youtube channels.

Target platform: Windows x86-64, however it was tested on stock wine and was proven to work just fine (You may need to provide the segoe ui font at its canonical path, however).

Features:

  • Adding channels via their real channel id and via the channel handle (input supported with text files via the $ prefix too) / Removing channels.
  • Alphabetically sorted channel list and sorted by most recent video feed.
  • Proper view of the youtube specific data that other rss readers may not pick up on (except descriptions due to a personal preference).
  • Filter by full videos and shorts.
  • Opening any given video via the embed url, full url and invidious url.
  • Changing the invidious url.

Youtube specific details:

  • The RSS endpoints are not stable by any means, they can break at any time leading to increased failure rate or total outage.
  • Watching videos via embed links is easy and involves spoofing headers via specific extensions. Hint: You need to pretend to be inside of an iframe.

Fun facts:

  • The program is written in C++, but compiled via zig because it's mega portable and rad as hell. All you need to define is an alias for "zig c++", which is zig-cpp in my case.
  • I compiled SDL3, SDL3_image and freetype via zig too.
  • I didn't bother making proper makefiles or anything of the sort, as zig handles incremental linking by itself (if only the error/warning output wasn't a jumbled mess due to missing thread sync, wow).
  • I tried making LLM's assist me in developing this tool but more often than not it got in my way and hallucinated garbage. But I will give it credit for catching one undefined behaviour case. Probably just proves how fragile c++ can be.
