skunkWM

skunkWM - Skunk Window Manager - a lightweight X11 tiling window manager forked from dwm.

This project will no longer receive updates

Why?

I consider it finished.

Will bugs still be fixed?

Yes.

What's next?

A port to Wayland, and here where you can find it mouffette

Build and Requirements

To build skunkWM you need Xlib, Xft, Xinerama and make.

With scrot and xclip as an extra to take screenshot.

Debian / Ubuntu:

sudo apt update
sudo apt install libx11-dev libxft-dev libxinerama-dev make scrot xclip

Arch Linux:

sudo pacman -Sy libx11 libxft libxinerama make scrot xclip

Void Linux:

sudo xbps-install -S libX11 libX11-devel libXft libXft-devel libXinerama libXinerama-devel make scrot xclip

Fedora:

sudo dnf install libX11-devel libXft-devel libXinerama-devel make gcc scrot xclip

Installation

Clone this repository and cd into it.

Edit config.mk to match your local setup (skunkWM is installed into the /usr/local namespace by default).

Afterwards enter the following commands to build and install skunkWM:

make
# yes, run make first and only then
sudo make clean install

Configuration

On first launch, if the config file does not exist, skunkwm creates it from the shipped example and then starts. Use skunkwm --gen-config to create it explicitly, or skunkwm --gen-config --force to replace an existing file.

Running skunkWM

You need startx installed to launch skunkWM through X.

Create or edit your ~/.xinitrc:

Basic setup

#!/bin/sh

exec skunkwm

With D-Bus

#!/bin/sh

exec dbus-run-session skunkwm

Start applications alongside skunkWM

#!/bin/sh

dbus-run-session sh -c '
    sillyprogram &
    sillyprogramV2 &
    skunkwm
'

Then start your X session with:

startx

Inspiration

  • VXWM — the main inspiration for skwm infinite tagging

  • dwm-flexi - dwm but more friendly

  • i3 - mostly helping me through working on the config parser/hot reload

  • hevel — Wayland compositor

  • niri — My favorite tiling Wayland compositor

Development

SKWM is mostly a fun project of my own and what is the " p e r f e c t " wm for me and for my liking.

skwm is based on dwm. See LICENSE for licensing information.
